Virginia Beach and the nearby areas are rich in American history. In April 1607, the vessels Sarah Constant, Godspeed and Discovery entered the Chesapeake Bay, naming the spot Cape Henry and enabling settlements.

Present day Virginia Beach historical attractions include Old Cape Henry Lighthouse dating from 1791 and Adam Thoroughgood House, built around 1680. Other historic buildings include churches and spiritual houses.
